The coat of arms of Sierra Leone was bestowed on December 1, 1960 by Queen Elizabeth II . Its representation is not constitutionally established and is based on decisions of the parliament.

description

The coat of arms is divided into white and green by a serrated cut. In green, a red-armored and red-tongued gold running lion above which three torches in white beams are licking red. The base of the shield has two blue waves in white. Two golden, red- armored and red- tongued lions as shield holders stand on a green pedestal and each hold an oil palm tree with four fruits.

Under the coat of arms on a white ribbon in English the motto unity, freedom, justice .

symbolism

The lion in the shield on a green background refers to the country name ( Löwengebirge ) and the connection with the former British colonial rulers. The blue waves below symbolize the sea and the three torches are symbols of freedom. Shield holders are lions with oil palm trees.
