Sierra Leone Constitution
The Sierra Leone Constitution is the supreme law of the West African state of Sierra Leone . It is based on the principles of freedom , democracy and the rule of law .
history
The current constitution was adopted in 1991, reinstated in 1998 and changed several times since then, most recently in 2013. The first constitution for Sierra Leone as a republic was passed in 1971, ten years after independence in 1961. The Independence Act previously applied . In 1978 the constitution was geared towards a one - party system and changed in 1985.

The constitution provides for a classic division of powers into legislative , executive and judicial branches .
According to the constitution, the executive power lies with the president and his cabinet. The unicameral parliament has the legislative power . Judicial power lies with the Supreme Court , the Court of Appeal and the High Court of Justice . the judiciary is headed by the Chief Justice . The Supreme Courts together form the Superior Court of Judicature (roughly the Supreme Court of the Judiciary ).
