The coat of arms of Burundi has been in use since 1966 .

The gold-rimmed heraldic shield shows the head of a golden lion en face in red .

Three traditional African spears cross behind the shield .

Under the shield there is a scroll in front of the spear ends. On this is the French motto of Burundi:

"Unité, Travail, Progrès"
( Unity, work, progress )
