The Angolan license plates have white or silver-colored text on a black background. The license plates in Angola start with two letters that code the place of registration (e.g. LD for Luanda ), followed by four digits in two pairs. Two more letters appear at the end. Vehicles that do not have to pay tax are given signs with a green background. Diplomatic license plates show red inscription on a white background. No further symbolism is shown in Angola.

The Angolan license plate system is originally based on that of the former colonial power Portugal . Until 1955, the signs consisted of a letter and a consecutive number combination. Later all license plates began with an A for Angola and two more letters. This was followed by two pairs of digits separated by a hyphen. After independence in 1975 , this system was maintained until 1996. The basic scheme with three letters and four digits was retained, but the first two letters now indicated the place of origin.
