The license plates in Mozambique have shown black letters on a white (above) to light blue background (below) since around 2014. A small Mozambique coat of arms is emblazoned in the middle of the number plate . There is a certain visual similarity to the characteristics of the neighboring country South Africa . The license plates begin with the letters A or M . This is followed by two more letters, a three-digit number and two letters as an abbreviation for the province where the vehicle was first registered in Mozambique. For example MN for the province of Manica or MP for the city of Maputo .

Since motor vehicles have to be presented annually for a technical inspection ("Inspeção do Veículo" by INATTER) in the provincial capitals, the old license plates are gradually being replaced by the current version. The inspection certificate is refused to vehicles with old license plates.

The previous identification system was largely based on that of the former colonial power Portugal , where black signs with white lettering according to the AB-12-34 scheme were used until 1992. The license plates began with an M as an abbreviation of the country's name. Two more letters followed, the first of which indicates the origin of the vehicle. After a hyphen, two pairs of digits appeared, separated by another hyphen.

Diplomatic license plates show red letters on a yellow background. They start with the letters CD followed by a three-digit number indicating the country of origin. A three-digit serial number appears after the letter M.
