description

License plates for automobiles

Typical Gambian license plate, here in Banjul
A vehicle with a personal registration number

The issuing of a license plate costs 800 Dalasi (around 23 euros). There is also the option of a personal identification number . This license plate with a name, for example a first name and a number, costs 2300 Dalasi (around 66 euros), occurs less often and is requested by wealthy Gambians. A typical identifier, usually in white letters on a black background or black letters on a yellow background, is:

" BJL 7309 C"

Structure of the signs
  1. A two- or three-digit combination of letters stands for the region (see administrative structure of Gambia ) in which the vehicle was registered. The letter D on the signs comes from the original name Division instead of Region . The designation in the administrative structure was changed in 2007, the designations of the license plates were also adapted. So the name URD became the URR.
BJL - Banjul (or Greater Banjul Area )
WD (old), WCR (new) - West Coast Region
NBD (old), NBR (new) - North Bank Region
LRD (old), LRR (new) - Lower River Region
CRD (old), CRR (new) - Central River Region
URD (old), URR (new) - Upper River Region
    KM - Kanifing Municipal
  2. A four-digit number combination
  3. One letter from A to R.

The combination KM for "Kanifing Municipal" is given less often. Mostly one finds in the combo-St. Mary Area the license plate combination BJL . This is due to the fact that arriving vehicles are not allowed to leave the port of Banjuls without an official license plate.

License plate for motorcycles

License plates for motorcycles have a " MC " ( English Motorcycle ), a letter combination for the region (until 2007: division) and a four-digit number combination. There used to be no letter after the group of numbers, but this is no longer the case.

Nationality mark

The nationality symbol for Gambia is WAG ( English West Africa Gambia ) and has been used since 1932. However, there are very few vehicles with this number plate.

Special identifier

The army of the Gambian armed forces , the Gambia National Army , uses the abbreviation GNA .

Reform 2019

In September 2019 it was announced that a new labeling system would be introduced together with Comfort Quality Services Ltd. In contrast to the previous number plates, the new number plates are said to be more durable and have stronger security features because they are made of aluminum. The fees are D1200 for license plates, D630 for motorcycle license plates and D5000 for personalized license plates.

The current license plates (as of February 2020) are white with black letters (private) or yellow with black letters (commercial). On the left edge is the Gambian national flag and under it "GPF" (Gambia Police Force).
