Johan van Enum was born the son of the painter of the same name, Johann I. van Enum , so that until his death, which is assumed to be in early 1594, the work of both artists cannot be differentiated and assigned. The father is proven in Flensburg by account books of the churches since 1573 and by the purchase of a house in the quarter of the Nikolaikirche since the beginning of the 1580s.

Johan II. Van Enum married into a respected family in Flensburg in 1592 and remained traceable through real estate until 1611. As a church jury and accountant, he left behind numerous written sources until around 1608. He worked for the Flensburg churches as a painter and gilder , especially in St. Marien (altar). The painting of the Nikolaikirche is said to have been his most important work, but it has not been preserved, so that one has to fall back on descriptions of literature. Further work on the company house and in the church of Garding is known from the period up to around 1604. At least during his time in Flensburg he worked closely with the carver Heinrich Ringerink .

After that, around 1607 he moved the focus of his work to Denmark, where he built the bedchamber of King Christian the Elder.
