Thangmar

Thangmar von Hildesheim (* approx. 940/950 in the Diocese of Hildesheim ?; † May 25th after 1019 Hildesheim ) was director ( scholaster ) of the Hildesheim Cathedral School and is considered the author of the biography of Bishop Bernward von Hildesheim , the Vita Bernwardi .

Life

The origin of this Saxon is unknown. He was initially a priest at Hildesheim Cathedral, and around 970 there, dean of the cathedral . As a schoolboy he was also a librarian and notary . From 976 he was the teacher and tutor of the later Bishop Bernward, presumably also of Heinrich II. Presumably before September 1000 he resigned from the office of cathedral dean.

When the Gandersheim dispute broke out with Archbishop Willigis from Mainz about whether Gandersheim belonged to Hildesheim or Mainz, he accompanied Bishop Bernward to Rome. In 1002 he made the trip again alone.

In connection with the campaign of Henry II against Baldwin IV of Flanders , in which Bernward took part in 1007, Thangmar is not mentioned. Thangmar can still be found in the list of witnesses in Bernwards' deed of foundation for St. Michael's monastery from November 1, 1019.

Thangmar found his grave in the Antonius Chapel under the St. Martin's Chapel, consecrated in 1003, in the cloister of the St. Michael Monastery, donated by Bernward , to which he had left a collection of 50 books.

Thangmar introduces himself as its author in the prologue of Vita Bernwardi . However, his authorship is generally recognized only for the first 10 chapters. The question is controversial for the following report on the stages of the Gandersheimer controversy that took place during Bernwards' lifetime and the Bernwards trip to Rome as well as the end with the construction of the monastery of St. Michael and Bernwards death.
