The license plate system of Madagascar is based on that of actively used 1950-2009 System of France at. The current system has been in use since 1959. The license plates do not bear any stickers that provide information about the technical condition of the vehicle, nor an official seal. The dimensions of the marks, the design and the font are also not precisely specified. There are both metal (aluminum) and plastic license plates , versions with and without a rim as well as more modern Euro license plates imported from France , which carry the European flag with the country code letter F on the left edge , without any objections. Since June 2014, the authorities have again ensured that the prescribed basic color black is used.

Normal license plates

Normal license plates have four digits followed by up to three letters. The first letter indicates the province in which the vehicle is registered:

License plates are numbered consecutively, when the digit 9999 is reached, the system continues with 0001 and the letter following in the alphabet in the last position on the license plate. Due to the higher number of registrations, a sequence of three letters is required for Antananarivo, all other provinces have so far only had license plates with a maximum of two letters.

The marks show white writing on a black background, with the writing on aluminum marks turning out to be silver due to the manufacturing process due to the removal of the black coating. Decorative fonts are not officially permitted, but are tolerated in private vehicles; There are no custom license plates.

Temporary license plate

After the purchase of a new vehicle or a change of owner, temporary license plates are in use until the final license plate is issued. The sequence of letters starts with WW followed by the code letter for the respective province. In contrast to the normal license plates, they have up to five digits.

Another form of the short-term license plate is assigned to dealers and workshops for test or delivery trips. These license plates only have a W followed by a three-digit number and the provincial code letter.

The gendarmerie and military have their own license plates, which differ from the normal license plates by the national flag on the left edge and the letters Z (for gendarmerie, malagasy = Zandarimaria ) or T ( tafika = military). The design of these marks is always in white letters on a black background.

State-owned vehicles have red license plates with black or white letters, numbers and letter combinations are assigned as with normal license plates.

Vehicles of diplomats and international organizations have green license plates with black or white letters and the letters CD ( Corps Diplomatique ), CMD ( Chef de Mission Diplomatique ), CMC ( Chef de Mission Consulaire ) or PE ( Pays étranger ). The first three digits form a code for the diplomat's country of origin (e.g. 009 for France), the digits after the letters are assigned consecutively for the vehicles registered.
