License plate (France) (1950–2009)
For the current license plate system in France, see license plate (France)
The system for license plates in France , which was valid until October 2009 , had existed since April 1, 1950. The old type of license plates remain valid unless the owner changes. Even today, there are still numerous vehicles with license plates based on the old model in traffic. It consisted of a "normal series" of numbering for most private and company vehicles as well as numerous special series, e.g. B. for authorities.
Normal series
With a few exceptions (overseas departments and temporary license plates), the entire license plate was no longer than eight characters and consisted of a composite
- a maximum of four digits (one digit only up to 1955; exception: Corsica 1976, since then at least two, starting with the "11"),
- a maximum of three letters and
- the number of the department
The departments of mainland France were identified by a two-digit number (01–19, 21–95). Department 20 ( Corsica ) was divided into two at the beginning of 1976. Since then, the island's license plates have been "2A" ( Corse-du-Sud , capital: A jaccio ) and "2B" ( Haute-Corse , capital: B astia ). Until August 1951, the departments 01 to 09 only issued license plates with the code 1 to 9, since then only two digits have been used. The overseas departments are given with three digits (971 to 974), whereby 9 and 7 can be placed one above the other for reasons of space.
Examples:
- 2928 TW 74; 324 EBS 91; 56 ABM 13
- 11 GY 2A
- 654 ANY 971
Restrictions:
- The letter O was not used at all, the letter U was no longer used later (risk of confusion with 0 and V)
- The letter I only appeared on special license plates (e.g. the IT = importation temporaire series , which was issued to diplomats based in Switzerland until 2003 and is gradually being phased out)
- The number of the respective department was never used as a sequence of digits in front of the group of letters (e.g. not “75 ABC 75”).
In France, there was (and is) no custom license plate , but a chronological allocation by the prefectures and sub-prefectures. As a result, the series usually started with 1 A in each department. It should end with 999 ZZZ at some point. The most advanced was Paris with the last assigned license plate 523 RQD 75. The furthest "back" was Lozère with the last license plate 2718 GT 48. The license plate was assigned to the vehicle and did not change when the owner changed, provided the new owner was resident in same department had. Numbers already assigned were (and will be) never reassigned after vehicles have been deregistered; the license plates are therefore usually not removed when the vehicle is logged off and scrapped.
A corresponding list can be used to determine the age of a vehicle based on the registration number, provided that it has not changed department since it was first registered (see tables below).
The color of the license plates was initially black with white or silver writing. From 1963 white license plates with black text were issued in front and yellow in the back. Since January 1, 1993, this color scheme (front white, rear yellow, black writing) has been mandatory for newly issued numbers. Since May 2007, white signs were also permitted on the stern. Vehicles that were assigned the old black license plates when they were first registered may continue to have such license plates, and these license plates may also be replaced by new, identically designed license plates. The Europe field with the nationality code F was introduced as an option in 1993 and has been mandatory since July 1, 2004. In practice, however, the "old" license plates without a Europe field were still available for new registrations. Until 1996 it was officially permitted to paint the number directly on the body instead of attaching license plates.
The license plates with special fonts that were previously tolerated and still seen from time to time are illegal today and driving with illegal license plates costs 150 euros. However, there was no regulation on the exact design of the identification font, so that one could choose between several approved fonts.
In contrast to Germany, the license plate said (and says) nothing about the last technical inspection ( Contrôle Technique ) carried out or the insurance of the vehicle. This data can be read on vignettes attached to the windscreen. Until 2000, the payment of the annual vehicle tax also had to be proven with a vignette on the windshield. Since 2001, however, no tax has been levied in France for keeping private vehicles; only when registering (verified by the Carte Grise ) is a fee due depending on the performance of the vehicle and other factors ( CV , cheval fiscal ). This fee is only charged if the owner changes. A similar fee, calculated on 1 CV, is charged when switching to vintage vehicle registration (Carte Grise Collection).
As part of the large-scale traffic safety offensive ("Sécurité Routière"), stricter rules were also introduced with regard to insurance and license plates. In order to prevent crime in connection with forged or invalid license plates and uninsured vehicles, the license plates have been riveted to the vehicle for some time.
A special feature were reduced front license plates, which were specially approved for a series of the Peugeot 206 . These license plates are about one centimeter narrower and about five centimeters shorter than the license plates in the standardized euro size of 520 × 110 mm.
Special series
Temporary license plates
The letter W was and is used in France for temporary license plates . A W instead of the serial letters were assigned number plates for workshops and dealerships (plaques de garage) . Temporary license plates showed the letters WW . French car manufacturers also used these plates to test pre-production cars. In contrast to the license plates of the normal series, up to nine characters could appear on these plates, e.g. B. 5267 WWP 29. Numbers with three letters in the WxL format were export labels for a destination country within the EU, the WxE format indicated a destination country outside the EU.
License plate for duty-free vehicles
Duty-free vehicles, for which no VAT is payable when buying, received red license plates with white or silver-colored letters. Vehicles bought in France from tourists or residents of French duty-free areas were assigned the letter combination Txx, where xx was a consecutive sequence of letters (e.g. 482 TMA 78). On the right margin, the validity of the approval was indicated by superimposed month and year numbers.
A different design existed for vehicles that were purchased outside the EU by residents of duty-free areas in France. The signs had five digits, the combination of letters TTx and no department number. The x stood for a letter that indicated the corresponding duty-free area: Q for Upper Savoy , W for Pays de Gex . Example: 10347 TTQ.
Authorities
The Police National and other non-military authorities had license plates on their vehicles that began with the two or three digits of the department. This was followed by a letter that defined the area of validity of the label: "D" for the département plus adjoining départements, "R" for the region plus adjoining regions, "N" (= national) for the entire national territory or "E" (= étranger ) for trips abroad. Furthermore, four digits and another letter appeared after a hyphen, which were assigned in ascending order.
Military plates
The license plates of the gendarmerie and other military vehicles initially have a sovereign emblem with a symbol of the armed forces on the left edge of the white or yellow and black license plates. The number consists of eight digits, the first of which indicates the armed forces:
The two following digits indicate the year of registration, the following the vehicle type. The last four digits were assigned consecutively. Example: 2001 5346 for a car registered for the gendarmerie (“2”) in 2000 (“00”) (“1”).
The private vehicles of French military personnel in Germany have blue license plates with silver lettering. They consist of six digits, the first two of which are separated from the last four by a hyphen.
Black signs with white letters are issued for private vehicles of German military personnel in France. They show the letters "DF" followed by four digits, the first of which indicates the stationing location.
Other characteristics
Although the Paris Fire Brigade is formally a military unit, it does not use military license plates. The signs still consist of a sequence of letters to identify the type of vehicle (e.g. "PS" for "Premier secours"), followed by a consecutive number.
Until 2003, the Parisian buses had license plates that showed a number consisting of four digits. Vehicles registered later received license plates from the normal series.
Agricultural vehicles had one to five digits on their license plates indicating the farm number, followed by the department number. Several vehicles from the same company may have the same registration number.
List of the departments with their special features
The departments were already sorted alphabetically and numbered by Napoleon (sometimes with different number assignments than today).
In the 1960s, a major administrative reform was carried out in the greater Paris area. The former departments in the Paris area were redistributed, so that the eight departments that exist today were created in 1968. Five of them were given the numbers 91 to 95, which originally belonged to the départements into which Algeria, which belonged to France until 1962, was divided. The numbers 75 and 78, assigned to the Seine and Seine-et-Oise departments before the territorial reform , were assigned to the city of Paris (75) and the newly created Yvelines (78) department. The division of Corsica into two departments (2A and 2B instead of 20) was recognizable from 1976 on the license plates.
Note: The list indicates the issue of the characteristics of new or previous departments, not the year of the administrative change!
