The “ Contrôle Technique ” (CT) is similar to the German main inspection ; it was adopted in France on June 18, 1991 and made compulsory on January 1, 1992; it led to the scrapping of a number of motor vehicles . Up until this point in time, there was no government-ordered, regular inspection of motor vehicles in France.

New vehicles have to be presented for the first time after four years, then every two years. The costs are the same nationwide (around 60 EUR depending on the vehicle type).

The "CT" is proven by a sticker in the windshield and stamped on the Carte Grise .
