Carte grise ( dt. Gray card ) is the former colloquial term for the French vehicle registration, which is based on the Council Directive 1999/37 / EC of April 29, 1999 on registration documents for vehicles in the forgery-proof registration certificate certificat d'immatriculation, CP was converted.

The exhibition is regulated in Art. R322-1 - R322-14 of the French Road Traffic Act and since November 2017 no longer takes place at the Prefecture , but exclusively via an online system. After submitting the required documents, the applicant first receives a provisional approval ( certificat provisoire d'immatriculation, CPI) with a period of validity of one month, the final approval, issued by the French national printing company , follows by registered mail by post. The vehicle can also be used in Germany while waiting with a French short-term license plate, the so-called WW license plate.

In France, the registration certificate consists of only one part. In Germany, however, Part I of the registration certificate has replaced the vehicle registration document since October 1, 2005 , and Part II of the registration certificate has replaced the vehicle registration document .

For the purchase of a vehicle, and is transferred to Germany, the French registration papers are compared with the registration authority as a proof of authorization available within the meaning of 12 § 1 1 para. Sentence vehicle registration regulation (FZV).
