Police national
The National Police ( German National Police ; formerly Sûreté nationale ) is the main police executive body in France alongside the national gendarmerie . The National Police is responsible for the cities, while the Gendarmerie takes on the police duties in rural areas.
It reports to the Ministry of the Interior and employs around 145,000 people.
history
A forerunner of the Police nationale is the Sûreté security agency founded by Eugène François Vidocq at the end of 1811 under the umbrella of the Paris police. The Sûreté is now regarded as a pioneer of all criminal police organizations in the world. On April 23, 1941, the French police were nationalized under the Vichy regime and first referred to as Police nationale . Only the police prefecture of Paris was excluded from the nationalization . In 1944 the Police nationale was replaced by the Sûreté Nationale , but the organizational form was largely retained. On July 9, 1964, the Police Prefecture of Paris was also subordinated to the Sûreté Nationale , and on July 10, 1966, the final reorganization into the Police nationale in its current form took place.
In 2019, a thirty-day general compulsory service with the Service national universel (SNU) , the "General National Service", was decided, which can in part also be performed nationally with the Police.
construction
The General Directorate of Police nationale (DGPN, Direction générale de la police nationale) is subordinated to five central directorates , three directorates , two services as well as the general inspection and the police prefecture:
- Directorate for the administration of the Police nationale (Direction de l'administration de la police nationale, DAPN)
- Directorate for the formation of the Police nationale (Direction de la formation de police nationale, DFPN)
- Central Directorate for the Criminal Police (Direction centrale de la police judiciaire, DCPJ)

Until July 1, 2008 there was the Directorate for the Surveillance of the Territory (Direction de la surveillance du territoire, DST), which acted as a domestic secret service , and the Central Directorate for General Information ( Direction centrale des renseignements généraux , DCRG), which acted as the central archive and was responsible for overseeing gambling and horse racing. Both directorates were merged in the new authority “Central Directorate for Domestic Intelligence Services” ( Direction centrale du renseignement intérieur , DCRI). The new authority is independent and no longer part of the national policy.
Police officers
Up to 1953 and again since 1972, officials of the higher service were designated as Inspecteur de police (with different degrees). In 1995, the careers of the Inspecteurs de police (criminal police) and those of the Officiers de paix (protection police) were combined to form the Corps de commandement , which took over the rank designations of the Officiers de paix . The last used rank designations Inspecteur (since 1995 Lieutenant ), Inspecteur principal ( Capitaine ), Inspecteur divisionnaire ( Commandant ), Chef inspecteur divisionnaire ( Commandant ) were dropped.
Below the Corps des inspecteurs de police , the Corps des enquêteurs ( Enquêteur de 2e classe / 1ère classe and Chief-enquêteur ) existed between 1972 and 1995 , which acted as interrogators. In terms of rank, they were equal to the members of the Corps des gardiens de la paix et des gradés in the police force. In 1995, the Enquêteurs were classified as Gardien de la paix , Brigadier and in the then new rank (Brigadier) Major .
Police officers are now classified into four careers:
- Les adjoints de sécurité (security assistants; corresponds to the simple service in Germany)
- Corps d'application et d'encadrement (Corps of training and support; corresponds to the middle service in Germany)
- Corps de commandement (Corps des command; corresponds to the higher service in Germany)
- Corps de conception et de direction (Corps of conception and leadership; corresponds to the higher service in Germany)
Senior officers of the General Directorate of the National Police are recruited from the higher service. The general director of the Police nationale is normally recruited from the prefectural career (Corps préfectoral) .
