The bicycle police is a part of the police force that uses bicycles as operational resources .

Tasks and possible uses

Basically, police officers on bicycles are regular emergency services and pursue the same tasks as their motorized colleagues. The main focus of their work, however, is the control of other cyclists and pedestrians and the punishment of their violations of the traffic regulations . However, they also take action against other road users who obstruct (bicycle) traffic and can patrol areas that are difficult to access for patrol cars, such as inner city areas with narrow streets or public parks.

Use in Germany

In Germany , a bicycle police is mainly used in large cities. In 2012, 700 bicycle police officers were on duty in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia alone .

The officers of the bicycle police, like all members of the protection police, are in uniform. However, their uniforms are adapted for cycling and equipped with reflectors so that the police officers can be better seen in traffic. It is also compulsory to wear protectors and a bicycle helmet . On warm days they go on patrol in short shirts and cycling shorts. Their equipment depends on various conditions such as the weather and the mission and usually includes a weapon and baton.
