National universal service

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In 2019, the French President Emmanuel Macron introduced the Service national universel ( SNU ) or the General National Service , which will be mandatory for all citizens between the ages of 16 and 25 from 2021. The service period initially lasts one month and can be performed in both civil and military facilities. The aim of this general service is to convey French values, to strengthen social cohesion and to promote social commitment. As has been emphasized, it is not a matter of reintroducing compulsory military service.

Expiry of the service

The basis of compulsory service is to "increase the cohesion of the nation". For financial reasons, the service should only last one month. The conscripts have to put on uniform-like uniforms, hand in their mobile phones and are housed in communal accommodation far from their home community. Half of the period of service is occupied with civics and theoretical training. The daily routine follows a strict plan, the hymn is sung in the morning at the flag roll call, after which courses must be attended, such as a first aid course, an introduction to the written driving test and learning how to behave in the event of a terrorist attack. The other half of the time must be completed with a non-profit association, the military , the police or the fire department.

implementation

From 2021 until it is fully implemented in 2026, the national service is to become mandatory for all young citizens. The completion of the SNU should become the prerequisite for taking the Abitur and driving test.
