Vir is a port town on the island of the same name, 26 km northwest of Zadar . The distance by sea to Zadar is 15 nautical miles. According to tradition, St. John's Day (August 29), the patron saint of the municipality of Vir, is celebrated with a large folk festival. In terms of area, Vir is the eighth largest among the islands off Zadar; It ranks 20th among all Croatian islands.

Vir is mentioned for the first time in historical documents in 1069 in the charter of King Petar Krešimir IV . This document is better known under the name "Mare nostrum Dalmaticum" . In this charter, Vir is named “Ueru” or “Veru”. This name suggests to scientists a very old origin, since the name means pasture place .
