The Sukošan municipality had 4,583 inhabitants in 2011. Most of them were Catholic Croats . Sukošan has numerous beaches and is located right at the gateway to the Kornati archipelago. The population of the place lives from tourism, agriculture and especially from olive , fruit and wine growing . The villages of Debeljak, Glavica and Gorica belong to the Sukošan municipality.
Attractions
In addition to the sea and the beach, Sukošan also has a number of attractions.
The Church of Our Lady , which is located in the center of the old village of Sukošan, was built in the 17th century. It stands directly opposite the "Gornja Vrata" city gate, on the square of the same name. Built at the time of the Kandijsk war and the plague, it was dedicated to St. Mary out of gratitude for being spared from the plague.
A special feature is that loopholes were built into the church, based on which one can conclude that it also served as a shelter in the area in front of the city gate.
But the landmark of Sukošan is the former archbishop's summer residence Palac, which was built at the end of the 15th century in the middle of the Golden Harbor ("Zlatna Luka") bay on an artificially raised island. It was the destination of the dignitaries of the city of Zadar. Today only a few modest remains are reminiscent of the residence, but they reveal the size of that time.
The patron saint of Sukošan is St. Kassian . A common feature of Sukošan with Imola (Italy), Brixen (Italy) and Mexico City (Mexico). Kassian was a teacher in Imola in the third century AD who secretly taught Christianity. Blown open, the Roman prefect of Imola had him arrested and taken to the main square of the Roman city, where Cassian was supposed to make an offering to the pagan gods. Because he refused, he was sentenced to death. His students had to carry out the punishment. They whip him and stab him with iron pens. Corresponding traces were found when his grave was opened (2004). Pope Pius XII proclaimed him the patron saint of teachers and stenographers. On August 13th, the day of his death, a procession in honor of the saint takes place in Sukošan . The place name of Sukošan, which is called San Cassiano in Italian, is said to be derived from the name of Saint Kassian.
