Kolan is a municipality in Croatia in the Zadar County .

Location and inhabitants

Kolan is located in the heart of the island of Pag . It is the only inland settlement on the island. In addition to the eponymous place Kolan (379 inhabitants), the municipality of Kolan also includes the village of Mandre with 395 inhabitants and the hamlet of Kolanjski Gajac with 17 inhabitants, both of which are located on the coast. From Kolan you can climb the highest mountain on the island, Sveti Vid (348 m).

specialty

Kolan is best known for its Pag cheese . This pure sheep's cheese is traditionally used as a starter. The milk for this special cheese comes from a small, free-living species of sheep that is raised on the island's mountainous areas. Storms bring salt to these mountain areas. This salt is consumed together with the sage and the straw flower, which is mainly used by the sheep to eat, and gives the unmistakable aroma. The young cheese is available between the end of winter and the beginning of spring. This is gentler and easier. The old cheese, on the other hand, is rare because of its demand. The old cheese is hard and is mainly used for cooking.
