history
Pag already existed in Roman times and was known as Pagus . The Lirburni , an Illyrian people , settled there even before the Romans . The first documentary mention of Pag dates back to 1070. In 1244 the city was declared a free royal city by the Hungarian King Béla IV . In 1376 she was granted autonomy by King Ludwig I of Hungary. 1510 raged in Pag plague and the town was burnt down and built north of its original position. From the old town of Pag, only the Church of St. George has survived. In it is a statue of Mary that survived the fire. Every year on August 15th there is a procession from the old church to the new St. Mary's Church.
