Slavkov u Brna (German: Austerlitz ) is a small town 20 km east of Brno in Moravia ( Czech Republic ). It became known through the battle of Austerlitz , which was fought southwest around the Pratzeberg near Újezd u Brna .

history

The area around Slavkov belonged to the Moravian-Slovak Empire of the Lucka. It was originally called Neusedlitz ( Novosedlice ), which was already mentioned by the chronicler Cosmas of Prague and which belonged to the Teutonic Knight Order at the beginning of the 13th century . He built a commander and a fortress there , the remains of which can still be seen in the castle's cellar vault. In 1223 the parish church of St. Marien and the St. Jacobi church were mentioned. In 1237 King Wenzel I confirmed the possession of the Teutonic Knight Order ; presumably he commissioned the order at the same time to found a city. King Wenceslaus IV granted the city a coat of arms and the right to seal in 1416. Since Austerlitz supported the Catholic side in the Hussite Wars , it was then given as pledge to various aristocrats, including the Lords of Sternberg . In 1509, the noble family von Kaunitz took over the rule of Austerlitz for more than four centuries .

Their religious tolerance made a major contribution to the economic and cultural development of the city in the 16th century. Anabaptists who had been expelled from Tyrol began to settle in 1528 . In 1535 about 80 Anabaptists from Český Krumlov found a refuge in Austerlitz. At times there were two Anabaptist congregations in the area with the Austerlitz brothers belonging to the Marpeck district and a congregation belonging to the Hutterites . The members of their community acquired extensive estates and were mainly active in pottery and weaving. The Anabaptist community was one of the largest in Bohemia until its expulsion in 1622. The Bohemian Brothers were also able to develop in Austerlitz. They had their own house of prayer since 1510 and held synods in 1572 and 1584 . The parish of Austerlitz had been Lutheran since 1575.

After the end of the Thirty Years War , only 128 of the 348 houses in the city were still inhabited. After the founding of a textile manufacture by Count Dominik Andreas I. von Kaunitz , an economic boom followed. In 1850, Austerlitz became the seat of the district court. From 1949 to 1960 the city was the seat of the district of the same name.
