Quais de Paris

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The systematic construction of the quays (bank fortifications / roads) of the Seine and its tributaries in Paris began with the two sections Quai Anatole France (from 1705, originally also named after the mayor C. Boucher d'Orsay) and the Quai d'Orsay ( from 1808). The first bank fortifications were built as early as 1313, at the later Quai de Nesle (today part of the Quais de Conti ) and the Quai des Grands Augustins , at the upper end of which the Pont Saint-Michel was built as the first new stone bridge. Together with the river and its bridges, they are all a World Heritage Site (UNESCO list; since 1991 under the name Les berges de la Seine à Paris , in the ICOMOS archive of the World Heritage Site)

After a long series of floods in the city districts and the destruction of the wooden bridges by floods, they served as bulwarks against the water and at the same time as landing stages for the supply ships. Only later did they become traffic routes for cars or promenades for leisure and tourists. On the Plan de Turgot , which was largely taken to scale in 1736 - based on the then responsible Prévôt des marchands, Michel-Étienne Turgot (1690–1751), published in 1739 - the many unpaved shorelines can be seen well.

Administratively, the Seine often forms the border between the twenty districts (arrondissements) of the French capital. The quays are often used to describe them.
