The Ile Saint-Louis is next to the Ile de la Cité , the smaller of the two in the middle of Paris located inland islands of the Seine . The island belongs to the 4th arrondissement and together with the eastern part of the Île de la Cité forms the Notre-Dame quarter .
history
While the Île de la Cité was settled early on, its neighboring island remained undeveloped until the beginning of the 17th century . Strictly speaking, it consisted of two neighboring islets, but separated from one another by an arm of the Seine, which were called "Île aux Vaches" and "Île Notre Dame". Both were used as pastures and belonged to the church. Although there was an acute shortage of space on the Île de la Cité and there was great interest in clearing the neighboring islands, the church resisted building for a long time.
In 1614, Louis XIII finally commissioned . the building contractor Christophe Marie with the development of the site. The two small islands were enclosed with a quay wall, the arm of the Seine that separated them was filled in and bridges were built to the river banks. The bridge that connects the island with the Marais still bears the name of its builder: Pont Marie . It was completed in 1635 and originally (as was common at that time) houses were built on.
The newly won urban area was initially built with houses for craftsmen and merchants from around 1618. It was not until 1638, when the end of the legal dispute with the clergy became apparent, that the nobles began to have luxurious city palaces built. The development was based on a fixed basic plan with straight streets that can still be seen today.
In 1726 the island got its current name after Ludwig IX. , who was canonized by Pope Boniface VIII in 1297. During the revolution, her name was briefly changed to "Île de la Fraternité".
To this day, Île Saint-Louis is one of the most desirable and expensive places to live in Paris.
