Antoine Chrysostôme Quatremère de Quincy
Antoine Chrysostôme Quatremère de Quincy (born October 21, 1755 in Paris , † December 28, 1849 there ) was a French writer , archaeologist and art historian .
Life
Quatremère de Quincy was sentenced to death in 1796 for alleged involvement in the preparation of a monarchist uprising, but was later acquitted. In 1797 he was elected to the "Council of Five Hundred" (introduced by the constitution of the Directory ), but had to go into hiding after participating in a royalist uprising. In 1800 he was appointed Secretary General of the General Council of the Seine department.
Between 1788 and 1825 he published three volumes on architecture of the systematically structured Encyclopédie méthodique , which was published by Panckoucke .
Quatremère de Quincy was secretary of the Académie des Beaux-Arts from 1816 to 1839 , and in 1818 he became professor of archeology at the Bibliothèque nationale . In 1809 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . The Bavarian Academy of Sciences accepted him as a foreign member in 1810.
He was the author of numerous articles and books. His main work is the book Le Jupiter Olympien (Paris 1814) about the Zeus statue of Phidias in Olympia.
