The Pont de la Tournelle (English translation: turret bridge ) in Paris is a bridge over the Seine . It connects the Île Saint-Louis in the 4th arrondissement with the Quai de la Tournelle in the 5th arrondissement .
The water level has been measured at this bridge since 1759 .
history
At the point where the Pont de la Tournelle stands, there was already a wooden bridge in the Middle Ages , which was badly damaged by a flood on January 21, 1651 and rebuilt as a stone bridge in 1656. Demolished in 1918, it was replaced by the current building in 1928.
The Pont de la Tournelle is deliberately built asymmetrically to match the image of the Seine at this location. It consists of a large central arch and two smaller arches and has a pylon almost 15 meters high on the Rive Gauche , which is crowned by a statue of St. Genoveva of Paris . The statue is by Paul Landowski .
The name Tournelle comes from a tower in the city wall from the 13th century.
