Forum Thomanum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Forum Thomanum (spelling forum thomanum ) is an internationally oriented, Germany-wide unique, music education campus in Leipzig's Bachviertel , which has been organized as a non-profit association since 2002 , has its headquarters in the Thomashaus at the Thomaskirchhof and has a full-time managing director . First chairman is the first pastor of St. Thomas Church Britta Taddiken . The Forum Thomanum has now also been registered as a word mark .

The innovative and award-winning project of the city, which has been committed to the Forum Thomanum since 2008 with the help of numerous prominent personalities, aims to preserve the 800-year tradition of the "Thomana" ( St. Thomas Church, St. Thomas Choir and St. Thomas School ) for the future and to be linked with an educational offer. On the one hand, it was possible to fall back on a historical inventory, on the other hand, the properties were modernized and expanded through renovations and new construction. The city of Leipzig identified the project as a major investment and estimated an investment of around 30 million euros. The 6,000 m² comprehensive campus between Hiller-, allotments, Kathe Kollwitz and Ferdinand Lassalle Street was inaugurated in 2012, the anniversary of the Reformation in 2017, the last work that since the beginning of the Leipzig architects Weis & Volkmann Berlin GmbH realized and have been awarded monument protection prizes.

The motto of the Forum Thomanum, which has been included in the Leipziger Notenspur (sheet of music), is “learn to believe to sing” - up to 1,200 children and young people are to be taught here. According to the association chairman, it is not about a Christian elite project. Rather, they want to "show that children [...] can also enjoy classical music ". Society needs “more culturally educated, religiously bound, socially competent, democratically minded people”.

The campus was part of the model project koopstadt for urban development in Bremen , Leipzig and Nuremberg , which was funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development from 2007 to 2015 as part of the national urban development policy .

The initiators for the Leipzig Education Campus Forum Thomanum were primarily Thomaskantor Georg Christoph Biller and Stefan Altner as well as Roland Weise and Christian Wolff . In 2002 the association forum thomanum Leipzig eV was established. This should realize the first efforts of the school board of trustees, which was formed in the 1990s, to preserve the tradition of the triad St. Thomas Church, St. Thomas Choir and St. Thomas School ("Thomana"). Members of that board of trustees included a. Georg Christoph Biller, Klaus Lindner , Burkhard Jung ( Lord Mayor of Leipzig ) and Christoph Michael Haufe .

From the 2000s onwards, the project for the further development of the choir and the musical direction for the future became more concrete: in 2003 the Leipzig architects Weis & Volkmann were included in the planning - they developed a master plan . In 2004 Christian Wolff became the first chairman of the association, where city honorarians gathered to preserve the "Thomastradition". The first statute was drawn up by the lawyer Frieder Schäuble †, brother of Wolfgang Schäuble . Also in 2004 a concept was presented for the following institutions: a musical and bilingual day-care center, a primary and a middle school, a youth music academy (musicaccademia) and the multifunctional Luther Church . These should be linked with the Thomas School and the alumni of the Thomanerchor , as central facilities, as well as a sports and leisure facility.

According to a free project study (2007) by the management consultancy McKinsey & Company mediated by Albrecht Schmidt , the city council of Leipzig unanimously agreed in a fundamental decision in 2008, i. H. cross-party, to the Forum Thomanum. The association, which has been registered in the register of associations at the Leipzig District Court since 2002, has had a full-time managing director since 2009 .

In 2012 the association had a proven record of 233 members. The institutional members of the association include a. the University of Music and Theater "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" Leipzig , the Evangelical Publishing House and the Carl and Anneliese Goerdeler Foundation .

The association is a 100 percent partner in the following GmbHs :

  • forum thomanum Schools GmbH, founded in 2010
  • musicaccademia forum thomanum GmbH, founded in 2009

Thomaner Journal

The association was co-editor of the Thomaner Journal founded in 2008.

Board of Trustees

Prominent artists and politicians belong to the board of trustees from the beginning. a. Anne-Sophie Mutter , Kurt Masur †, Henning Scherf , Rüdiger Frohn , Thomas Rietschel , Barbara Ischinger and Georg Girardet . Further personalities from politics, economy and science could be won u. a. Christoph Brand , Sebastian Gemkow ( Saxon State Minister of Justice ), Konrad Hummler , Hans Walter Hütter , Martin Kohlhaussen , Thilo von Trotha and Christoph Wolff .

Sponsors and supporters

The association has been able to acquire donations amounting to millions since its inception: In addition to the city, the association's supporters include a. various German and Swiss foundations (Stiftung Freise, Dr. Heinz-Horst Deichmann-Stiftung, Johannes-Rau-Stiftung, JS Bach-Stiftung St. Gallen and Stiftung Mercator Schweiz etc.), the Gustav-Adolf-Werk , the Saxon Wind Philharmonic , various banks, the Lions Club Leipziger Ring, the BMW plant in Leipzig - which has also been a cooperation partner since 2015 - the Bundeswehr training command, as well as the German and British entrepreneurs and patrons Johanna Quandt , Ralph Kohn , Friede Springer , Arend Oetker , Jörn Kreke , Wigand von Salmuth and Christoph Brand.

As an “ambassador”, the association also shows a. the ensemble Nobiles and Giovanni di Lorenzo .

inauguration

To mark the anniversary of the Trias in March 2012, the education campus was officially inaugurated by Leipzig's Lord Mayor Jung and Pastor Wolff. Before that there was a pageant from the Thomaskirche, where the official ceremony “800 years of Thomana” took place in the presence of the designated Federal President Joachim Gauck .

In the same year, the Forum Thomanum with the Thomasschule, villa thomana and Luther Church hosted the 5th Luther Conference of the International Martin Luther Foundation . In this context, the Luther Rose was awarded to the manager Jon Baumhauer .

In addition, the documentary Die Thomaner was broadcast in 2012 , which also shows the choirboys on campus.

Education campus

The music critic Hagen Kunze described the Forum Thomanum as "unique in Germany". According to Ursula Wiegand ( Forum Kirchenmusik ) the project has "Signal character for Germany". According to the cultural functionary Uli Kostenbader ( music forum ), there is an exemplary and "sensible [] connection between cultural and educational policy". The music journalist Sabine Näher (Musikforum) rated the educational offer as “novel []” and “forward-looking []”. The project is "a prime example of civic engagement", as the journalist Alexandra Gerlach ( Deutschlandradio Kultur ) commented. According to the art and architecture critic Arnold Bartetzky , who also took a position in the FAZ , it was a "demanding long-term project" that contributed to a "development impulse" for the northern Bachviertel in the outer western suburb.

The Forum Thomanum, a talented music campus from kindergarten to grammar school, is roughly divided by Kostenbader into two so-called main features, a school branch (Paedagogicum Musicale) and the academia, the latter being the Bach Archive , affiliated institute of the University of Leipzig , plays an essential role alongside other musical institutions.

The music campus is station no. 8 on the sheet music of the Leipziger Notenspur , which covers the western city center as a “musical” walk. The city tour "Via Thomana", leading through the Nikolaikirche (at the Nikolaikirchhof ), the Thomaskirche, the new Bach monument and the Bach Museum , ends at the education center.

Villa thomana

Villa Thomana : Office of the Thomaskantor and rehearsal center

In 2005 the listed Villa Thomana ( original spelling villa thomana ) in Sebastian-Bach-Straße was acquired from the Neo-Renaissance . This was made possible by capital from the Leipzig Canons of St. Thomae Foundation. In 2007/08 the building was expanded, rebuilt and restored by the Weis & Volkmann office for 1.8 million euros . Since then it has been used as the rehearsal center of the St. Thomas Choir and the official seat of the St. Thomas Cantor ( Gotthold Schwarz since 2016 ). The builders received 2nd prize at the Hieronymus Lotter Competition for Monument Preservation (2008) by the Leipzig Cultural Foundation and at the Federal Prize for Crafts in Monument Preservation / Saxony (2013) from the German Foundation for Monument Protection and the Central Association of German Crafts .

day care center

In 2008 the day care center supported by the Leipzig vocational training center was opened on the grounds of Villa Thomana , which was implemented as a wood - clad low-rise project after a competition in 2007/08 . It has 100 crèche and kindergarten places and conceptually links languages, religion and music. The day care center with early musical education offers either English or Italian . She is an indirect member of the diaconal work of the Evangelical Lutheran Regional Church of Saxony . A cooperation exists u. a. with the sports association LVB Leipzig .

Thomas School

Thomas School: grammar school with a deeper musical profile

The 800-year-old Thomas School in Leipzig, located in a listed building on Hillerstraße since 2000, is the municipal high school with all-day courses on the education campus. It is mostly visited by “external people” (non-Thomanians). The school leading to the general higher education entrance qualification ( Abitur ) offers a linguistic, an artistic and, as one of five Saxon high schools, a deepened musical profile . The foreign languages English, Latin, French, Ancient Greek and Italian are taught.

Alumnate

In 2008 the city council decided to renovate and expand (to 120 places) the alumnate (boarding school) of the St. Thomas' choir. In the meantime, housed in containers on campus , the Thomaner (members of the Thomanerchor) have been back at home with the Alumnate since 2013; the investments amounted to 11.4 million euros. The architects' office Essmann, Gärtner, Nieper Architekten GbR received an honorable mention at the Architecture Prize of the City of Leipzig in 2013.

primary school

In 2010/11 a primary school with after-school care center was opened, which was officially recognized as a substitute school in 2013 and developed the three profiles of religious education, music and languages for girls and boys. A St. Thomas' qualification with voice training and music theory is offered. There is also an active primary school choir and orchestra. The choir, under the musical direction of Matthias Schubotz , performed with the Heeresmusikkorps Kassel at a benefit concert in the Leipzig Gewandhaus in 2014 . A year later there were performances with the Ensemble Nobiles and the Ensemble Amarcord .

In 2014, a music education cooperation agreement was concluded with the "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" University of Music and Theater in Leipzig . For example, an exchange with the Forum Thomanum is possible in the pedagogical-artistic master’s course with a focus on singing pedagogy in the field of classical singing / music theater. The voice physiologist Michael Fuchs from the Leipzig University Hospital sees this development in a work on “developing voice performance and quality” as beneficial for long-term studies among children and adolescents.

The newly founded school newspaper received funding from the Saxon Ministry of Culture in 2015 . In 2016, the project week “Science meets school” was organized in cooperation with the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig .

Initial construction delays resulted in a fire letter from the citizens in 2013 , which u. a. was signed by Engelbert Lütke Daldrup , Christian Führer , Georg Girardet , Roderich Kreile , Arend Oetker and Helmuth Rilling as well as the Friends of the Dresden Kreuzchor . Until 2017, the primary school is temporarily located in the Leipzig-Gohlis district , in 2016 the topping-out ceremony for the 7.2 million euro new building on the corner of Schreber- and Sebastian-Bach-Straße, the property of the war-torn Anglican church ; the after-school care center will be located in the listed former parish hall of the Luther parish .

Luther Church

Luther Church : place of worship, school auditorium, event facility

The Protestant neo-Gothic Luther Church at Johannapark , which is already being used as a "spiritual center", has been renovated for around 6 million euros since 2013 and will also serve as a school auditorium for the St. Thomas School and the St. Thomas Choir as a concert hall (concert church) from 2017, the anniversary of the Reformation .

Musicaccademia

The international youth music academy ("musicaccademia") with guest house is currently being set up. Here the music of Johann Sebastian Bach , once Thomas Cantor, is to be brought closer to guests from Germany and the world. Several composition workshops for children and young people have already taken place within the framework of the Academy . a. the composers Manuel Durão , Christian FP Kram and Aristides Strongylis lectured. In 2016 an a cappella workshop was held with the Amarcord ensemble .

Middle school

Since admission to the choir has only been possible for high school students (students at the Thomasschule), but the aim is to generate more applicants, a new middle school is to be built. The Leipzig city council unanimously approved the project in 2008.

Further collaborations

The Forum Thomanum was repeatedly integrated into the Leipzig Bach Festival . In 2006 the forum, together with the composition / composition department of the University of Music and Theater "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" Leipzig, the Society for Music Theory and the State Institute for Music Research - Prussian Cultural Heritage , both in Berlin, co-organized the symposium " Sethus Calvisius ". In 2008 the musicologist Gesine Schröder published the accompanying volume "Tempus musicae - tempus mundi" with audio CD. In 2014 the forum was part of the VDI Zukunftspiloten summer camp .

In 2012, a cooperation agreement was signed with the private Lutheran Valparaiso University from Indiana .

Appreciations

In 2012, the St. Thomas Choir was awarded a special prize by the ECHO Klassik for its international educational campus .
