Leipzig Cultural Foundation

The Kulturstiftung Leipzig - Foundation for Monument Preservation, Urban Culture and Environmental Protection is a legal foundation under private law based in Leipzig , it pursues exclusively non-profit purposes.

The foundation was established on January 26, 1990 and with the certificate of July 18, 1991 recognized by the former regional council of Leipzig as foundation number 1 in the then administrative district of Leipzig.

The statutory purpose is to promote culture and cultural institutions, monument protection, nature conservation, social engagement of individuals or groups, which is aimed at the realization of people, as well as the science and research that serves these goals. The foundation bodies are the foundation council and the executive board.

As the first major monument protection project, the cultural foundation took on the rescue and subsequent renovation of the old Nikolaischule immediately after its establishment . By resolution of the city council at the time, the building was transferred to the foundation, whose headquarters it has been since it reopened on September 10, 1994.

The managing director has been the monument conservator and art historian Wolfgang Hocquél since July 1, 2008, and the university lecturer and pianist Rolf-Dieter Arens has been president since 2011 .

Awards and publications

The foundation has awarded the Hieronymus Lotter Prize for Monument Preservation every two years since 1992 . This award, named after the businessman and former Leipzig mayor Hieronymus Lotter (1497–1580), honors Leipzig builders for their special efforts in the renovation and restoration of architectural and cultural monuments.

In addition, the foundation has been awarding a sponsorship award for exemplary performance in environmental protection since 1992 . This environmental award is intended to recognize and financially significant ecological initiatives in the private and voluntary sector.

The cultural foundation has been publishing the cultural magazine Leipziger Blätter since 1991 .
