Wolfgang Hocquél

Wolfgang Hocquél (born September 25, 1947 in Merseburg ) is a German civil engineer , monument conservator and art scholar .

In Osterfeld in Saxony-Anhalt grown Hocquél studied from 1968 to 1972 at the University of Leipzig Building and graduated as an engineer specializing in civil engineering from. He then worked in the Leipzig Building Combine , which mainly built prefabricated buildings. In 1977 he was one of the founders of the Society for Monument Preservation in the Kulturbund of the GDR . Hocquél has been involved in the preservation of historical monuments in Leipzig since 1979, first in the culture department at the City Council of Leipzig, then as director of the office for architecture-related art and monument preservation for the Leipzig district .

After the political change, he initiated the first democratic people's building conference in Leipzig, which took place on January 6th and 7th, 1990. There, the planned demolitions in the old towns were denounced, with which the state wanted to eliminate the effects of 40 years of GDR building policy. These demolitions were prevented just in time. A year later, on January 1, 1991, Hocquél became head of the higher monument protection authority for the Leipzig administrative district . Most recently, he headed Divisions 52 (urban development, urban development funding and housing) and 53 (structural monument protection). On July 1, 2008, Hocquél left the regional council at his own request. His words “In the early years I enjoyed working in administration. Now my qualification is obviously no longer needed. ” Are a criticism of the Saxon preservation of monuments, in particular of the Saxon municipal reform , which the higher monument protection authority practically abolished.

From 2008 to 2015 he was the managing director of the Leipzig Cultural Foundation , which he has advised since it was founded in 1990. Hocquél is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the Leipzig Cultural Foundation. In 1982 he was one of the founders of the cultural magazine Leipziger Blätter .

The University of Leipzig doctorate Wolfgang Hocquél 1987 in art science with the theme of Leipzig merchants' houses, exhibition halls and passages . He published many writings on the preservation of historical monuments and building history in Leipzig.

In 1995, Wolfgang Hocquél was the winner of the Osgar award from Bild-Zeitung Leipzig . He is the father of two children.
