action

Roger lives in New York . He falls in love with his neighbor Amanda, whom he woos unsuccessfully. A friend gives him the secret tip that a certain Dr. P runs a school that teaches male behavior. Roger enrolls for the expensive course and learns many useful rules to conquer women. It is suggested to him and his classmates that serving up lies and putting oneself in dangerous situations for no reason makes an impression on women. Roger sticks to this advice and makes rapid progress in soliciting Amanda.

That calls Dr. P on the plan, for whom it is a challenge to get those students back down to earth who, in his opinion, succeed too quickly. He also begins to be interested in Amanda, for whom he now rivals Roger. He pulls out all the stops, pretending to be a grieving widower and child-friendly surgeon. Finally, with the help of classmates, he denounces Roger as a loving stalker in front of Amanda . In return, Roger lets Dr. Tow P, whereupon this cleverly causes Roger to lose his job. Finally, Dr. P offers him a "truce" and the repayment of half of the course costs, but makes it clear to him that he has fallen in love with Amanda.

In desperation, Roger seeks out former student Lonnie, whose similar fate has already made the rounds. His girlfriend was introduced to him by Dr. P relaxed and now he lives neglected with his cats in a small apartment outside the city. Lonnie tells him his story, shows him collected information about the Doc and together with Roger's friends Walsh, Diego and Eli, whom he met on the said course, they try to get Dr. P to finally put an end to the trade. He has already booked a flight with Amanda to a fictional medical congress. A diversionary maneuver succeeds in which Lesher, the doctor's right hand, is switched off and Amanda is picked up by Diego at the airport instead. In the meantime, Roger meets the doctor there, confronts him with the information he has gathered about his true identity and thinks he is already on the road to victory. But Dr. P just applauds and in turn confronts Roger with two tickets in the name of Amanda and Roger for winning his “final exam”.

Roger believes him and arranges for Amanda, who was supposed to be driven to the doctor's wife, to be taken to the airport. There he is waiting for her with flowers. But he was supported by Dr. P sent to the wrong gate . Dr. P and Amanda already checked in. At the last second, Roger storms into the plane and is initially mistaken for a psychopath by the passengers . He draws his last trump card and plays a swoon that overtakes him from time to time - most recently even in Amanda's presence. Now the help of the wrong doctor is Dr. P asked, who quickly diagnosed Roger with no breathing and saw the chance to put an end to the whole thing with a defibrillator .

But Amanda notices that Roger is still breathing and realizes that Dr. Ps. She strokes Roger and gives him a kiss. From now on the two are a couple.

Some time later, Roger and Dr. P, who hands him his "diploma". Roger declines an invitation to participate as a guest speaker in one of his courses.

criticism

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film looked like a wasted opportunity. He is too "lukewarm" for a black comedy, not black enough. Billy Bob Thornton plays well, but he alone is not worth the ticket price. Jon Heder is not a good choice, he lacks the personality to keep up with Thornton.

Robert Koehler wrote in Variety magazine on September 24, 2006 that not even the presence of Billy Bob Thornton could bring the comedy to life. The two main characters are poorly developed.

Peter Travers wrote in Rolling Stone magazine on September 21, 2006 that the film was "raging" and "unexpectedly snappy". Travers praised the director and screenwriter Todd Phillips for hiding an “unassailable cleverness” behind “silliness”.

In the opinion of the Cinema editorial team, the film is “a rude satire on rituals of masculinity - with a soft core. Hearts are trumps!"

The lexicon of the international film found: "Black-romantic comedy about the printing of masculine role models, which convinces through good character development and performance."

Awards

Jon Heder was nominated for the Teen Choice Award in 2007.
