Howard Allan Stern (born January 12, 1954 in Queens , New York City ) is an American talk radio host and a media personality.

Life & Work

Howard Stern began his career in the 1970s. Because of his unconventional, provocative and scandalous demeanor, he became known in the media landscape in the USA. His most famous show, the "Howard Stern Show", was syndicated in the US and broadcast on more than 50 radio stations. Until he switched to SIRIUS Satellite Radio on January 9, 2006, Howard Stern was the most successful radio DJ in New York.

Stern's autobiography Private Parts was filmed in 1997 by Betty Thomas under the same title .

In 2004, Stern was charged with provocative and "disreputable" statements on his show and immediately banned from broadcasting the largest US radio syndicate " Clear Channel ". The FCC ( Federal Communications Commission ), with whose boss Michael Powell Stern was in a long-term feud, imposed a fine of US $ 1.3 million on Clear Channel . By the time Stern joined Sirius, the total fines he had to pay increased to $ 2.5 million.

He signed contracts with the media company CBS and the Clear Channel, each worth around 100 million US dollars. According to the list of the world's highest-paid celebrities by the US magazine Forbes for 2005, Stern took second place with an income of around 237 million euros. Only director Steven Spielberg had a higher income than him in 2005.

Howard Stern Show

The Howard Stern Show is a talk radio show .

The show includes daily and private topics as well as interviews with celebrities such as Lady Gaga , Chris Martin or Charlie Sheen , most of which go uninterrupted for 45 minutes or longer.

Stern's co-host and news anchor is Robin Quivers. She has been part of the show since 1981.

In 2001, Artie Lange replaced long-time star show comedian Jackie "The Joke Man" Martling. Lange achieved great fame in the USA through the comedy series MADtv . At the end of 2006, his performance in New York's Carnegie Hall was sold out within a few hours. On September 21, 2006, he admitted being addicted to heroin, live on the Howard Stern Show. He left the show after a failed suicide attempt in December 2009.

Fred Norris is responsible for the sound effects during the show. Of all employees, he has worked with Stern the longest. Norris has her own band called "King Norris".

Howard Stern's producer Gary Dell'Abate, often nicknamed "Bababooey", "Fafa Fooey" or "Tata Toothey", is often a victim of teasing and Stern's outbursts. A constant topic are Dell'Abate's big teeth and lips, as well as mistakes he caused in the production of the show.

The Stern Show also includes comedy writer Benjy Bronk, comedian Sal the Stockbroker and musician Richard Christy.

The show begins with a song or two and comedy clips, followed by discussions, calls, and guests in the studio or on the phone. Guests included " The Osbournes ", James Brown , Jessica Alba , Donald Trump , 50 Cent , and often female porn stars such as Jenna Jameson , Jesse Jane , Devinn Lane , Jasmin St. Claire , Savanna Samson and Taylor Hayes . In addition, there is the so-called “Wack Pack”, a group of people who have accumulated over 20 years and who all have a certain talent or special quality and therefore appear regularly on the show, for example midgets, men with particularly bright voices or the mentally handicapped.

2.28 meter tall actor Matthew McGrory was also a member of the Wack Pack known as "Bigfoot" before he became famous as the giant in Big Fish .

Change to SIRIUS

In January 2006, Howard Stern, the self-proclaimed "King of all Media", switched to the digital satellite radio Sirius , whose paying listeners then tripled. There he got a five-year contract worth $ 500 million.

After the FCC repeatedly sued Stern and several stations were shut down, he took the opportunity to switch to the satellite broadcaster, for which the FCC has no supervisory authority. This allows Stern to make "the most revealing radio show of all time" that made him and his crew famous.

At the end of 2006, he received a bonus payment of $ 83 million. The bonus became due when the number of subscribers exceeded, which was stipulated in the 2004 contract.

At the end of 2010 he extended his contract with Sirius XM Radio for another 5 years. The annual payments for the production of the show and the salaries of the employees are said to be 80 million dollars. In 2015 his contract was renewed for another 5 years.
