Todd Phillips
Todd Phillips , actually Todd Bunzl , (born December 20, 1970 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American director , producer and screenwriter . He achieved greater fame above all as the director of the Hangover trilogy and the comic book adaptation Joker .
Life
Todd Phillips attended NYU Film School but dropped out before graduation and began making documentaries . His first directorial work Hated in 1994 showed the life and death of punk rocker GG Allin . He later founded the New York Underground Film Festival , a platform for documentary and experimental films . After two more documentaries, Frat House (1998) on the dark side of fraternity life and Bittersweet Motel on the Rock Band (2000) Phish , he moved into comedy fold.
His first comedy Road Trip hit theaters in 2000. Another teen comedy followed in 2003: Old School with Luke Wilson , Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn . Starsky & Hutch , based on the 1970s television series Starsky & Hutch , hit theaters in 2004 . This time Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson played the leading roles. With that, Phillips has worked with all of the core members of the Frat Pack aside from Jack Black and Steve Carell . In addition to directing, Phillips was also responsible for the script for all three films. This also applies to the successful Hangover trilogy, which he produced between 2009 and 2013.
In 2019 he released a Joker solo film with Joker . Joaquin Phoenix plays the main role . Phillips himself was nominated for directing and writing (together with Scott Silver ) at the 2020 Academy Awards.
Phillips has worked with cameraman Lawrence Sher and film editor Jeff Groth for several years .
In addition to his successful film career, Phillips is also a successful poker player. So he made it to a final table at the World Poker Tour in 2005 and finished fifth.
