Golden Globe Award / Best Film - Drama

Winners and nominated feature films for the Golden Globe Award in the category Best Picture - Drama ( Best Motion Picture - Drama ), which rewards the most outstanding feature films of the past calendar year. The category was launched in 1951. From 1944 to 1950 the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) awarded a film award ( Best Picture ) without subdivision by film genre. The award goes to the film production company or the US film distributor .

According to current regulations, the running time of the films must be at least 70 minutes. The productions must have been shown in the Los Angeles area for seven days in the previous year. At the same time, the film must be made available to members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in special screenings (a regular cinema release or a press screening to which the members are invited also fulfills this condition). Musicals are intended to be defined as a comedy or drama in which songs, rather than spoken dialogue, are used to move the plot forward. Fiction films with a share of at least 51 percent of non-English language dialogue or higher may only be nominated in the category Best Foreign Language Film .

The best drama in motion picture was later awarded an Oscar 38 times , most recently in 2017 when it was awarded to Barry Jenkins ' Moonlight . Films directed by Elia Kazan , David Lean and Steven Spielberg received the most awards (three wins each).
