Ava DuVernay (born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach ) is an American film director .

Life

Ava DuVernay grew up in Lynwood and Compton , California . She studied English and African American studies at the University of California, Los Angeles , which she graduated with a BA in 1995.

She started her professional life as a journalist, switched to PR management and in 1999 founded her own agency "DVA Media + Marketing". In 2008 she produced her first feature This Is the Life through the "Good Life Cafes" in Los Angeles . In 2011 she made her first feature film, I Will Follow , about the death of her aunt , with Salli Richardson in the lead role. Her feature Middle of Nowhere was recognized at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival .

She directed the first major production for the film Selma, which came out in late 2014 . The film is about Martin Luther King , Lyndon B. Johnson and the marches of the civil rights movement from Selma to Montgomery in 1965. To criticism of the attitude of President Johnson depicted in the film's script , DuVernay replied that her film was not a documentary, she was herself not a historian, but a writer. At the 2015 Academy Awards, the film received an award in the Best Song category . In the nominations, there was criticism that neither the black lead actor David Oyelowo nor she had been considered.

Her documentary The 13th (13th) won the British Academy Film Awards in 2017 and was nominated for Best Documentary at the 2017 Academy Awards .

With her film A Wrinkle in Time , a film adaptation of Madeleine L'Engles youth novel of the same name , she was the first black director to be given a budget of over 100 million dollars for a real- life version . In its opening week, it was the second most successful film after the recently released Black Panther .

DuVernay's series Queen Sugar has been on the Oprah Winfrey Network since 2016 , the third season of which is in the works.

In 2018 she was appointed to the competition jury of the 71st Cannes Film Festival .
