Queen Sugar is an American television series . By Ava DuVernay conceived and Oprah Winfrey co-produced series in the US since September 6, 2016 the transmitter Oprah Winfrey Network to see, based on the novel by Natalie Baszile . Even before it was first broadcast, the series was extended by a second season. Four seasons have now been broadcast; a fifth is being planned.

The series follows the lives of three siblings from rural Louisiana : two sisters, Nova Bordelon (played by Rutina Wesley ), a journalist and activist who lives in New Orleans , and Charley Bordelon ( Dawn-Lyen Gardner ), a sports manager who leaves her upscale Los Angeles home with teenage son Micah to return to Louisiana after her father dies. Her brother Ralph Angel ( Kofi Siriboe ) is a single father struggling with unemployment and beginning to renew his relationship with the former drug addict mother of his son Blue. Together they inherit from their father - an 800-acre sugar cane farm . The siblings have to deal with their relationships with one another and their family history and withstand the challenges of agriculture and the racism of neighboring landowners.
