Rutina Wesley (* 1979 in Las Vegas , Nevada) is an American actress . She was best known for her role as Tara Thornton in the television series True Blood .

Life

Wesley was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. Her parents are Cassandras Wesley, who worked as a showgirl, and Ivery Wheeler, a professional tap dancer . At the age of seven she played in a performance of the musical The Golden Rainbow , which, according to her own statements, led to the decision to become an actress. After attending high school for international studies, performing and visual arts in Las Vegas, she studied at the University of Evansville, Indiana, where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in theater performance. She then attended the renowned Juilliard School in New York from 2001 until her graduation in May 2005 . As part of this study, she played in performances of MacBeth , Richard III. and others.

Career

Wesley's first major appearance was on the Broadway musical Time Window , directed by David Hare . In 2005 she played a supporting role in the film Hitch - The Date Doctor , which however no longer appeared in the final version. She made her film debut in 2007 with her leading role as Raya Green in How She Move . From 2008 to 2014 she played the role of Tara Thornton in the television series True Blood .

Private life

Wesley lives half of the year in Los Angeles and the other half in Astoria, Queens. She married actor Jacob Fishel in 2005 . The couple separated in July 2013, and Wesley filed for divorce in August 2013. In November 2017 she got engaged to the chef Shonda.
