The song of Bernadette (original title: The Song of Bernadette ) is an American film drama by the director Henry King from 1943. It was based on the novel of the same name by Franz Werfel about the life of the canonized Bernadette Soubirous .

action

The frail girl Bernadette lived in the small French village of Lourdes in the mid-19th century . One afternoon, her siblings leave her by a river so that she doesn't catch a cold while crossing. A female saint appears to her in a grotto with the request to pray the rosary with her . Later she gives her the task of looking for a source. Bernadette finds the source - the water seems to have healing properties. The villagers fear for the reputation of their place, and the church is initially keeping a low profile. Bernadette is interrogated and is asked to withdraw her statements, but she sticks to her statement that she really saw apparitions. When Lourdes becomes a great place of pilgrimage, Bernadette goes to a monastery, is humiliated by her novice teacher and dies young of bone tuberculosis.

background

Jennifer Jones is the pen name of Phyllis Isley. She had already made three smaller films under this name in 1939 without attracting much attention. She took the stage name to be "discovered" for this film.

In the film, Bernadette's boss finally realizes that she was a chosen one and regrets her bossy behavior. In reality, she stayed with her negative assessment and resisted her veneration as a saint even after Bernadette's death.

At $ 2 million, the film was Twentieth Century Fox 's most expensive production of 1943.

Linda Darnell , who played the apparition of saints, was originally supposed to get the title role, but then lost it to Jennifer Jones. Linda Darnell's name was also not included in the opening credits.

Reviews

In its review, the film-dienst rated King's film as an “epic, broad-based historical-religious drama” that captivates with “the simple piety and the (almost always perceived) decency of the presentation”. The Evangelische Film-Beobachter took a somewhat more critical view of the film : “A work that strives for religious seriousness primarily through the selection of the actors, but which is only appreciated with reservations because of the directness in the miracle scenes and the perfection in convincing even the last skeptic can. "
