Sig Ruman
Sig Ruman (born October 11, 1884 in Hamburg , † February 14, 1967 in Julian , California , actually Siegfried Albon Rumann , also Sig Rumann ) was an actor of German origin in US films.
Life
Siegfried Rumann got his first engagement in 1904 at the Stadttheater Bautzen . In 1906 he went to Stettin , and from 1907 to 1912 he was part of the ensemble of the United Theater in Kiel . From 1912 to 1919 he played at the City Theater in Königsberg and from 1919 to 1922 at the Landestheater Altenburg , where he also worked as a director.
On New Year's Day 1923 Rumann came to the United States and played repeatedly on Broadway in New York . He made his first film Die Königsloge (at that time still in German) in June 1929. At that time Siegfried Rumann, who Americanized himself in Sig Ruman in America, was already 44 years old. It wasn't until 1934 that the man from Hamburg turned regularly.
His distinctive face made him one of Hollywood's most famous supporting actors . During the Second World War Ruman was seen repeatedly in the role of unsympathetic Germans. To be or not to be by Ernst Lubitsch from 1942 with Ruman as Colonel Erhardt ("Concentration Camp-Erhardt") is probably his most famous film next to Ninotschka . He was dubbed here as in a number of other films by the actor Werner Lieven . In The Hitler Gang at the end of 1943 he embodied the Reich President Paul von Hindenburg . Billy Wilder used Sig Ruman four times in his films, in I kiss your hand, Madame , Stalag 17 , Eins, Zwei, Drei (US voice for Hubert von Meyerinck) and Der Glückspilz , his penultimate major film role. He made his last small film appearance in early 1966 in The Moon Calf , a comedy with Jerry Lewis .
Sig Ruman died of a heart attack in 1967 at the age of 82 .
