action

Angela Chiaromonte is the daughter of a wealthy Italian count who died after falling from a horse. According to the will, Angela is to inherit a large estate, but her older half-sister, the Marchesa di Mola, burns the last will of both fathers and takes the inheritance instead of Angela. The little sister is suddenly impoverished. After all, the young woman finds her great love in the handsome officer Giovanni Severini. When he is sent on a campaign to Africa, Giovanni falls into the hands of Arabs. Since nothing more is heard from him, the Italian captain is finally pronounced dead. Bowed by deep grief, Angela decides to say goodbye to her worldly life and puts on the robe of a religious sister: she becomes a "white sister".

Meanwhile, Captain Severini has managed to escape his captors and returns to Italy. Horrified that he has lost his great love for the Catholic Church and God, Severini tries to kidnap Angela, but finally accepts her decision in favor of her nun existence. But then Vesuvius suddenly erupts , and Captain Severini can demonstrate all his daring and nobility in saving the people of Naples . In the general commotion, the Marchesa di Mola is seriously injured and crawls into a church, where Angela has also found refuge. After her half-sister asks forgiveness for her sins, Angela grants her them. When the lava masses crush huge water tanks, the area is also flooded. Giovanni drowns while rescuing a mother and her children. The white sister prays to God that he will take him and that she and Giovanni may one day be reunited.

criticism

In Paimann's film lists is to read: "In the foreground is the exceptionally well-done drawings of the environment and the dramatic performance of Gish also the rest of the ensemble plays well The subject is very sentimental but well kept audience appeal, of a generous presentation in the scenes.. The water masses would be better left out of the game. In contrast, the director succeeded in depicting the mood before the catastrophe brilliantly. The photos are unequal, but satisfactory. "

“This production is a remarkable, artistic effort that has seen producers sit back and cling to the solid value of this film, which was made entirely in Italy and directed by Henry King. (...) Despite the fact that this story is full of emotions and tears, Miss Gish's acting is always reluctant. It takes full effect in every situation and is, as the Italians say, “simpatico” in all settings. (...) The actors are recorded. Mr. Colman's Giovanni is wonderful, and Gail Kane is particularly effective in the unsympathetic role of the Marchesa. It is an extremely competent cast. "
