action

Part 1 : Bernadette Soubirous, the daughter of a poor miller, appears for the first time on February 11, 1858 while collecting wood in a grotto, a lady dressed in white who later tells her that she is the Immaculate Conception , the Blessed Virgin Mary . When the fifteen-year-old tells about it, nobody believes her, since only she is able to see the woman. When the virgin appears again and a healing spring rises at this point, this changes, especially since a blind person can see again by wetting his eyes with the water. In total, Saint Bernadette appears eighteen times and shows her hidden springs whose water can heal the sick.

The small town of Lourdes at the northern foot of the Pyrenees becomes an overnight attraction for hundreds of pilgrims . But despite the miracles that Bernadette works because of her visions, there are always skeptics who oppose the young woman. Village pastor Peyramale, who at the beginning also harbored a certain skepticism, is one of the people who stands by Bernadette.

Parallel to the story of Bernadette, that of the French doctor Henri Guillaumet, who is in Lourdes in search of his faith, is told. He came to Lourdes with his fiancée Claire La Fontaine, a rich and beautiful young woman. Claire is consumptive and appears to be doomed; the doctors give her next to no chance of survival. If anything, it can only be saved by a miracle.

Part 2 : The hardly hoped for miracle occurs after Claire comes into contact with the healing water. She gets well almost overnight. While she herself can hardly believe the great happiness of her recovery and in her gratitude does not question her further, Henri, who needs an explanation for everything, desperately looks for an answer. His view of the world has shaken that there is such a thing as healing through a miracle, he cannot believe that.

First of all, however, the young couple marries in the church in Lourdes. Henri Guillaumet resumed his lectures for students in Paris, but was forbidden to speak of the miracle that happened to his wife. Because of Henri's inexplicable healing, the young couple repeatedly argues. Henri decides to go to Lourdes again without his wife, where he wants to convict Bernadette of the lie.

Bernadette has meanwhile decided to go to the Convent of the Sisters of Mercy because the people in the village won't let her rest. But even in the convent, the nuns attacked the young girl and accused Bernadette of lying. One evening she collapses in the hall of the monastery. Bernadette has suffered from bronchial asthma since early childhood . However, she is recovering. Bernadette has to answer questions in this environment of an episcopal commission.

In the meantime, Henri Guillaumet has contacted Sister Marie-Thérèse, who is full of envy of Bernadette and considers herself much more worthy to be chosen than this little insignificant girl, as she says. When she realizes how much Bernadette is struggling with questions, she changes her mind and withdraws her offer to help Guillaumet. This is shortly afterwards attacked and seriously injured. Bernadette, who is training to be a nurse, takes care of him. When he is back on his feet, he has a very constructive conversation with Bernadette, in which the young woman impressively explains to him what belief is. To be able to find God, one needs the simple heart of a child. Through this, Henri finally found his inner peace again.

Present : In present-day Lourdes, the young photojournalist Bernard, whose wife is expecting a baby, works with the diary of his ancestor, the doctor Henri Guillaumet. He is also in a crisis of meaning and is afraid, because his wife and the unborn child are in danger. He prays to the Madonna when his wife has to undergo another examination. The news she brings him is good.

history

Bernadette Soubirous

Bernadette Soubirous (1844–1879) was a French religious sister . In 1858 the young woman had several apparitions of Mary in her hometown . In the Roman Catholic Church , Bernadette Soubirous is venerated as a saint . Her birthplace, Lourdes , became one of the most important European pilgrimage sites . The white-clad lady is said to have asked Bernadette for 15 more meetings when she appeared three times.

Soubirous showed signs of bronchial asthma in early childhood , which is also where her previous death from bone tuberculosis at the age of 35 can be traced back. It is also assigned a general dystrophy (developmental disorder associated with physical impairment). Soubirous entered the Saint-Gildard Convent of the Sisters of Mercy in Nevers in 1866 . There she received the religious name Marie Bernarde. Her novice master Marie-Thérèse Vauzous, who was already her religion teacher at school, was not fond of her, rejected the visions of Lourdes and, after the young woman's untimely death, opposed the ensuing veneration.

Pope Pius XI said Bernadette Soubirous on June 14, 1925 and blessed on December 8, 1933 (the the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception) holy . Bernadette's feast day is April 16, the anniversary of her death.

criticism

"TV film about the beginnings of the pilgrimage site in the south of France, which explores less theological depths than offers soulful entertainment."

On the website of Sarto-Verlag (publishing house and mail order bookshop of the German district of the Society of St. Pius X. ) it says: “The story of St. Bernadette is not out of date. This is shown by the adaptation of the historical material by the Italian director Lodovico Gasparini. In it he weaves a fine thread between the events in Lourdes in 1858 and the life of a young French photographer who is looking for his faith in Lourdes today. "
