life and work

Delannoy's parents came from Upper Normandy . He himself was born in the Paris suburb of Noisy-le-Sec and was the descendant of Huguenots who were called De la Noye and later Delano.

While studying in Paris, Delannoy began to act in silent films. He ended up working for Paramount , where he worked his way up to become a film editor . In 1934 his first directorial work, the short film Une vocation irrésistible , formed the cornerstone for the second phase of his career, in which he also worked as a screenwriter. In 1946 his film Und es war Licht was awarded the Grand Prix as one of eleven films in Cannes . In 1960 Commissioner Maigret Set a Trap received a nomination for the British Film Academy Award .

His first major successes were Der Oberst des Kaiser (1942) and The Eternal Bane (1943). After films like And there was light (1946), The game is out (1947; after Sartre ) and Commissioner Maigret Sets a Trap (1958), intellectually demanding films followed, until he turned to television in 1976. This was followed by a series of films depicting the lives of saints: Bernadette - The Miracle of Lourdes (1988), La Passion de Bernadette (1990) and Maria von Nazareth (1995).

In 1986 Jean Delannoy received an honorary césar for his life's work.
