Gene Garrison is a professor from New York City who wants to change his life and the plan has to marry his girlfriend and to California to move. His mother Margaret understands his wish to move, but warns that such a long journey could be painful for his father Tom.
Shortly before the wedding, Gene's mother Margaret dies. His sister, who was rejected by her father because she married a Jewish man, advises Gene to live his own life and not let the father control her.

At the 1971 Academy Awards , No Song for My Father was nominated for three Academy Awards: Melvyn Douglas for Best Actor , Gene Hackman for Best Supporting Actor, and Robert Anderson for Best Adapted Screenplay .
Melvyn Douglas was also nominated for a 1971 Golden Globe for best actor in a drama and a Laurel Award . Robert Anderson eventually won the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Adapted Screenplay .
