- March 5: With Airport , the first of a series of disaster films from the 1970s comes to the cinemas, which is also characterized by a large selection of well-known film actors.

The festival starts on May 2nd and ends on May 16th. The jury under President Miguel Angel Asturias selects the following winners:

- Best actress: Ottavia Piccolo in Metello
- Best Director: John Boorman for Leo the Last
Berlin International Film Festival 1970
The festival starts on June 26th and ends on July 7th. The competition entry ok by Michael Verhoeven , of the Vietnam War as its theme, solves the biggest scandal in the history of the festival. The American jury president George Stevens speaks out against the film, which is brought to the public by other jury members. There is a dispute between the festival management and the jury. The jury resigns on July 5th and the festival is canceled. No prizes will be awarded by the jury.
