Gaston Modot
Gaston Modot (born December 31, 1887 in Paris , † February 19, 1970 in Le Raincy , France ) was a French film actor . He was an actor for more than 50 years and worked under almost all the important directors in his country.
Life
Modot lived in Montmartre at the beginning of the 20th century and met Picasso and Modigliani . He started with Gaumont in 1909 and was seen in all genres for the next 20 years of silent film . In 1917 he plays the lead role in Mater dolorosa of Abel Gance . He also worked in the avant-garde films Germaine Dulacs and Louis Dellucs La Fête espagnole (1919) and Fièvre (1921). Next to Max Linder he played again in 1924 under the direction of Abel Gance in Au secours! . Towards the end of the 1920s he appeared in German-French co-productions.
His portrayal of the "man" in Luis Buñuel's The Golden Age ( L'Age d'or , 1930) guarantees him lasting fame today. Under René Clair , Modot made his debut the year before (1929) in the sound film in Under the Roofs of Paris ( Sous les Toits de Paris ). In addition to Jean Gabin , he took on a leading role in Julien Duvivier's Pépé le Moko - In the Dark of Algiers ( Pépé le Moko , 1937). He played in The great illusion ( La Grande illusion , 1937) and The rules of the game ( La Règle du jeu , 1939), the classics by Jean Renoir , as well as in the poetic three-hour film Children of Olympus ( Les Enfants du paradis , 1945) by Marcel Carné .
In 1964 Gaston Modot ended his acting career. He starred in over 100 films.
