Ștefan Ciubotăraşu (born March 21, 1910 in Lipovăț , Vaslui , Romania ; † August 27, 1970 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian actor .

Life

Ștefan Ciubotărașu was born into a poor farming family. His family sent him to Bucharest in the early 1920s, where he was supposed to train as a shoemaker. It was there that he discovered his passion for the theater. When he returned to the family in the country, he went to school again from 1924, became interested in art, culture, poetry and began to write. He finally studied from 1929 to 1932 at the Conservatorul de muzică și artă dramatică in Iași and then moved to Bârlad , where he wanted to establish himself as a theater actor. However, it failed initially because its rural origins blocked several options. Only with the poet Mihai Codreanu , who taught at his old university and offered himself as a mentor, was Ciubotăraşu able to play regularly in the theater from 1934. In 1945 he played at the teatrele Alhambra and in 1950 at the national theater "Ion Luca Caragiale" in Bucharest.

From the late 1950s Ciubotărașu was also regularly seen in Romanian film . He was seen on the screen in films such as The Offender , The Morning Hour of a Good Boy and The War of the Princesses . He received greater attention for the portrayal of Petre in Liviu Ciulei's love drama The Forest of the Hanged . The literary film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Liviu Rebreanu took part in the competition at the Cannes International Film Festival in 1965 .

On January 13 Ciubotăraşu was a People's Artist of the Romanian People's Republic "for outstanding work in the field in theater, music and visual arts" and 1967 "a lasting and outstanding performance in the dramatic arts in theater" with that for Culture Merit Medal awarded .

On the morning of August 27, 1970, Ciubotăraşu died unexpectedly, shortly before he was to be taken to the filming of Das Warten by car . He had been married to Aurora Donose since 1934 and had a daughter with her since 1945. On August 16, 2010, in honor of the actor's 100th birthday , the Romanian National Bank issued a commemorative coin limited to 1000 copies, which is worth Romanian Leu .
