action
London 1910 . The Italian anarchist Errico Malatesta lives here in exile . Because of revolutionary activities in Ancona , he was initially exiled to the island of Lampedusa . Errico belongs to the Italian noble family of the Malatesta . The social conditions under which the poorer people in London had to live at the beginning of the 20th century show Malatesta the necessity of his social-revolutionary activities. In London, too, he set up a group of anarchists. They discuss the possibilities of putting their theories into practice and plan some actions, but the Malatesta repel them because of their violence. He hate rebellion. He sees himself as a revolutionary who does not want to implement his ideas by force. He is visibly withdrawing from the group and no longer wants to have anything to do with the group.
Reviews
- Lexicon of international film : The historical background of anarchist ideology and action also reflects a piece of modern contemporary history. Unexpectedly convincing: Eddie Constantine.
- Die Zeit : Lilienthal's film has something brittle and bulky about it, it keeps eluding. It's foggy and crumbly like a beautiful old photo, that's its quality and its danger.
- Evangelical film observer : A study on anarchism in the years before the First World War became a college on the political behavior of our time. The film wins through its colors and, above all, through the director's skill in seamlessly integrating historical documents, photos and newsreel recordings into the film and thereby giving it the stamp of authenticity.
Awards
Initially, the film was invited to the competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 1970 , but received nothing at the award ceremony. In the same year he won the German Film Prize in gold together with Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Katzelmacher . Cameraman Willy Pankau, production designer Roger von Moellendorff and Vladimir Pucholt as best supporting actor also received a German Film Prize in gold .
