Justus Pankau
Justus Pankau , actually Willy Pankau , (born December 27, 1923 in West Prussia ; † on the night of November 18, 2017 in Ludwigsburg ) was a German cameraman .
Life
Justus Pankau was born in West Prussia as the son of a carpenter and grew up in Dortmund from 1925, where he played football in his free time and was in goal at Borussia Dortmund . He trained as a mechanic at Hoesch AG . His actual career aspiration to become an engineer was thwarted when he was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1942. Pankau was trained as a gunner in the Luftwaffe. An injury sustained during a soccer game as a result of which a kidney had to be removed saved him from a frontline assignment.
After the war, Pankau worked again at Hoesch and continued to play football until he came to Hamburg in September 1948 through the mediation of an acquaintance who made documentary films and became his camera assistant. From 1950 Pankau began to work for the Neue Deutsche Wochenschau , in 1954 he switched to the Süddeutscher Rundfunk in Stuttgart, for which he worked until his retirement in 1989. In addition to many documentaries, he shot a large number of magazine articles, various Tatort episodes and individual films. He achieved spectacular recordings in the mid-1950s when he documented the construction of the Stuttgart television tower, balancing on a beam unsecured.
Well-known works by Pankau include the films Christiane F. - Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo , Malatesta , for which he received the German Film Prize in Gold in 1970 , or the Tatort episode Rot - rot - tot with Curd Jürgens in a leading role. In the early 1970s, Alfred Biolek engaged him for a series of episodes in the series Monty Python's Flying Circus .
In addition, Pankau has repeatedly held teaching activities, for example at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin , at the University of Television and Film in Munich and from 1991 to 1999 as a lecturer at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy . Pankau died at the age of 93 on the night of November 18th in Ludwigsburg.
