Golden leopard
The annual Locarno Film Festival awards the Golden Leopard ( Italian Pardo d'oro ) to the best feature film in the official competition. This makes it the most important award of the festival, even ahead of the jury's prize (Silver Leopard). A competition jury, which is mostly composed of international filmmakers, votes on the award of the prize.
The name has existed since 1968, before the film prize was known as the Grand Jury Prize ( Gran premio della Giuria ; 1966–1967), Goldenes Segel ( Vela d'oro ; 1958–1965) and Grand Prize (Gran premio) . In addition to the prize statuette, a bonus of 90,000 Swiss francs (approx. 80,000 euros (as of August 2011)) will be awarded equally to the director and the producers of the winning film.
Award winners
The works of French and Italian film directors were most frequently awarded the main prize in Locarno (11 wins each), followed by their colleagues from the United States (10), the People's Republic of China and Hong Kong (6), as well as Great Britain and the former Czechoslovakia ( 5 each). Only the French René Clair (1946 and 1947) and the Czech Jiří Trnka (1954 and 1955) were able to triumph twice in the early years . A rule that had been introduced in the meantime, namely that only debut or second films by a director should be allowed for the competition in Locarno, was abolished in 1996.
Directors from German-language cinema were successful for the first time in 1954 when the rotation of German Wolfgang Staudte was awarded a prize together with two other productions. He was followed in 1985 and 2006 by the Swiss Fredi M. Murer ( Höhenfeuer ) and Andrea Štaka ( Das Fräulein ) , while in 1988 and 2002 the Germans Wolfgang Becker ( Butterflies ) and Iain Dilthey ( The Desire ) were successful.
Awards for women filmmakers, similar to those at the Venice , Cannes and Berlin film festivals, remained exceptional. It was not until 1990 that a woman won the Golden Leopard, Swetlana Proskurina ( Slutschainy Wals ). The Russian's victory was followed in the years to come by awards for the Hong Kong woman Clara Law (1992 for Autumn Moon ), the French women Claire Denis (1996 for Nénette and Boni ) and Hélène Angel (1999 for Stumme Schreie ), Andrea Staka, the Chinese Guo Xiaolu (2009 for She, a Chinese ), the Argentine, who grew up in Switzerland, Milagros Mumenthaler (2011 for Abrir puertas y ventanas ) and the Bulgarian Ralitza Petrova (2016 for Godless ).
In the years 1946–1948, 1950 and 1952–1957 there was no official competition; a substitute jury chose the winner.
Golden Leopard (CP Company)
Since 1996, a second "Golden Leopard", donated by the Italian fashion company CP Company , has been awarded: until 2005 for the winner in the video competition , from 2006 in the competition for contemporary cineastes ( Cineasti del Presente ):
