Why did Bodhi Dharma set out for the Orient? is a 1989 South Korean feature film directed by Bae Yong-kyun .
action
The film about three Buddhist monks who live in a secluded monastery surrounded by forest in mountainous terrain is told in a modern way in fragmentary flashbacks. The three are an old master, a young novice who left the city to go on the path of enlightenment and an orphan boy. In the course of the film, the young monk returns to the city, symbolically into worldly life, although his master warns him, and there he discovers what was still indistinctly at the beginning of the film: his helpless mother, whom he left in order to be realize. How is a person supposed to get clarity of thought in such a conflict? In the Buddhist teaching as quoted by the master, a person can only be of full use when he has learned to curb his wandering mind. The novice's motivation is shaped by passions that dominate him. It then happens what has long been announced: the venerable master dies. The novice's heart is too full, his love for his master too great - he has succumbed to a new attachment, he does not recognize what his master taught him: “There is neither beginning nor end.” So the novice gives the orphan boy the clothes of the master, the memory or what is left of the master. The young monk begins his journey. The orphan boy throws the clothes in the oven. He renounces the material.

Reviews
The film-dienst judged: “A film full of clarity and beauty, the simple and yet enigmatic story of which is told in overwhelming images. Even if the spiritual message of the film will not be accessible to every viewer in every detail, the film, designed as a meditation exercise, offers an opportunity to reflect on the problems of being. It encourages exploring the essence of things behind their superficial appearance. "
