Nisos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nisus (lat. Nisus) is in Greek mythology a king of Megara , which is characterized by a purple Locke midst of his gray hair invincible.

When Minos , King of Crete, wages war against Athens after the Athenians have killed his son Androgeos, he besieges the Athens-allied city of Megara.

Nisos' daughter Scylla falls in love with Minos, whom she watched from the tower of her father's castle. To help him win and end the war, she cuts the purple lock of her father's head, brings it to Minos, and wishes him in return. However, he indignantly rejects her and her gift and describes her as a monster. After the fall of Megara, he sails away without Scylla, who throws herself into the sea after a long monologue and clings to Minos's ship. When she pursues her father, who has since turned into an osprey, and threatens to kill her, Scylla turns into the bird Ciris (from Greek κεῖρις "shearers").

Nisus has a son, Amphinomus, and the daughter Eurynome .
