Nicolaus Schaten (* May 6, 1608 in Heek , Prince Diocese of Münster ; † August 24, 1676 in Neuhaus , Prince-Diocese of Paderborn ) was a Jesuit and historian.

Life

Coming from a small village in the western Münsterland , Nicolaus Schaten enjoyed his schooling in the episcopal city of Münster . In 1627 he entered the Jesuit order and in 1638 became a teacher at the Paulinum grammar school in Münster . This was followed by a call from Osnabrück Prince-Bishop Franz Wilhelm , who among other things entrusted him with the order of the archives of the principality. The Münster Prince-Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen hired Schaten as a historiographer . In the new position, however, conflicts must have arisen, so that he felt the change to a new position with the Paderborn Prince-Bishop Ferdinand II von Fürstenberg as a “liberation”.

Ferdinand II, himself a historian, offered Schaten excellent working conditions. Above all, the Historia Westphaliae and the Annales Paderbornenses on the history of Westphalia and the Paderborn bishopric were created . The Annales in particular were distinguished by their loyalty to the source. His works were published several times up to the 19th century and cited by authors such as Johann Suibert Seibertz and Jakob Grimm . In his works there are also references to pre-Christian sites, such as the Donnersberg between the Warburg villages of Wormeln , Germete and Welda, as well as giant stone graves in what is now East Westphalia.

In addition to his work as a historiographer, Nicolaus Schaten taught at the Paderborn Theodorianum .
