Star Trek: New Voyages (from 2008 to 2015: Star Trek: Phase II ) was a fan-made science fiction series set in the Star Trek universe. The concept came from Jack Marshall and James Cawley and was put on paper in April 2003. The series, which was only distributed over the Internet, was intended to be a continuation of the original Star Trek series from the 1960s ( Spaceship Enterprise ). The action took place in the fourth year of the "five-year mission" of the original spaceship Enterprise . The old title Phase II alluded to the concept of a sequel to the original Star Trek series, which was developed under the working title Star Trek: Phase Two in the early 1970s by Gene Roddenberry , but never got beyond the concept stage.

The CBS Corporation - more precisely, whose responsible business unit CBS Paramount Television , which owns the rights to the Star Trek franchise - sued New Voyages in 2015 for infringement of copyright, after which the production of new episodes was stopped. The lawsuit was dropped on it. Since 2016 there have been very restrictive fan film rules and therefore there will be no more episodes.

actor

In Star Trek: New Voyages , Captain Kirk was portrayed by James Cawley (up to episode 8) and Brian Gross (from episode 9), Jeffery Quinn (episode 1–3), Ben Tolpin (episode 4–7) and Brandon Stacy (from episode 8) Mr. Spock and John Kelley played Dr. McCoy . Some of the original cast of the series reappeared in Star Trek: New Voyages , including George Takei as Hikaru Sulu and Walter Koenig as Pavel Chekov ; in the episode Blood and Fire has Denise Crosby ( Natasha Yar ) made an appearance.

production

New Voyages was considered to be one of the most ambitious and, with production costs of around $ 70,000 per episode, probably the most expensive fan projects. Eugene Roddenberry Jr., the son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry , worked as a consultant producer. James Cawley and Jack Marshall continued the five-year mission of the USS Enterprise with great technical effort. Some of the original scripts from Star Trek: Phase Two and Star Trek: TNG were able to fall back on. A total of eleven episodes (between 40 and 63 minutes long) and five short films have been released. To Serve All My Days was written by DC Fontana - Fontana wrote several episodes of Star Trek: The Animated Series, Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space 9, and Babylon 5 . The episode World Enough and Time is written and directed by Michael Reaves and Scott Zicree, who both worked on Star Trek: TNG and Star Trek: First Contact , respectively ; the book of the episode Blood and Fire is by David Gerrold ("Trouble with Tribbles"), who also directed.

Come What May

Episode 0 pilot film
The research colony Primus VI sends an emergency call because they are being attacked by a species that was still unknown (in TOS times). But before the USS Enterprise arrives, they are saved by a certain Onabi.

The somewhat eccentric humanoid Onabi is beamed onto the Enterprise with her companion, an energetic being called Ohn. It turns out that Onabi has supernatural abilities and the contact with Ohn shows individual team members an insight into a possible future: Spock's death is recreated in the warp chamber from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , but also a never-ending marriage between him and Christine Chapel in an alternate future.

Onabi predicts an exciting future with many dangers and many threatening species for the Enterprise and Starfleet, but emphasizes that the future is not yet written.

The final act, in which it drives away the actually superior foreign invaders, shows that the danger lies not in it, but in the as yet unknown encounters of the future.

John Winston, who played Lieutenant Kyle in the original series , returns as Captain Matthew Jefferies in this episode . The captain's name pays homage to Matt Jeffries , who designed the actual Enterprise. Eddie Paskey, who played a Lieutenant Leslie in nine episodes of Star Trek, also plays in the episode .

In Harm's Way

Episode 1
Kirk, commanding captain of the spaceship Farragut, is called to the planet Gateway , on which the well-known time portal ( The City on the Edge of Forever ) is located. There Spock explains that the timeline has been changed: Not the Farragut, but the Enterprise is Kirk's ship, not the Klingon Kargh, but he is the first officer, and the war of the Last Judgment, triggered by an armada of planet killers ( Doomsday Machines ) should not take place at all. So Captain Kirk goes back in time to prevent the destruction of the Enterprise under Captain Pike and to restore the timeline. But before that, Captain Pike still has to pay a high price for the fight, he loses his health when he is contaminated with delta rays.

William Windom returns in his role as Commodore Matt Decker in this episode . There's also a reunion with the crew of Captain Pike and Admiral Kirk. In Harm's Way (which can be freely translated as: “In the danger zone”, “On dangerous path”) is the title of several films, such as the western First Victory with John Wayne .

To Serve All My Days

Episode 2
Pavel Chekov initially survives an accident in the engine room unharmed, but as a result of the radiation he begins to age quickly. The aging process that started on Gamma Hydra IV (TOS: How quickly time flies) but actually overcome begins again. Now he has to deal with his imminent death, his life and his declining abilities in old age.

In a parallel storyline, the Enterprise is attacked by a fake Klingon ship. This leads Kirk to alliance with the Klingon Kargh to defeat the attacker and determine his true identity.

In this episode, Walter Koenig returns in his role as Pavel Chekov . The episode was reworked around the 40th birthday of the original series and was re-released on March 29, 2008 as a Special Edition - To Serve All My Days: A Night in 1969 . The contradictions that arise from the episode to Chekov's appearance in the Star Trek films that are set later on (e.g. “The Wrath of Khan”) are resolved by an epilogue.

World Enough and Time

Episode 3
In the neutral zone, after three Romulan ships have been destroyed, the Enterprise is trapped in a kind of multidimensional cage. When trying to get information from one of the ships, Sulu is thrown into another world for 30 seconds and returns aged 30 years.

In this episode, George Takei returns in his role as Hikaru Sulu . The Excelsior communications officer, Janice Rand , is portrayed by Grace Lee Whitney as in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Land . The computer voice speaks Majel Roddenberry , Gene Roddenberry's widow.

Blood and Fire Part One & Two

An outside team including Peter Kirk and his fiancé (!) Is investigating the disappearance of the crew on the USS Copernicus. In doing so, they discover a deadly threat posed by blood worms. Was a biological weapon developed here by the Klingons?

Episodes 4 & 5 Originally written
by David Gerrold for Star Trek: The Next Generation , this episode was not produced at the time because of very controversial topics such as AIDS and homosexuality. The first part was published on December 20, 2008. He shows u. a. Guest appearances by Nick Cook, who realizes the Scottish fan project Starship Intrepid , and by Bobby Rice (from the fan project Hidden Frontier ) as Kirk's nephew Peter Kirk.
Another theme of the double episode is the relationship between Kirk and his nephew.

Denise Crosby , known as Tasha Yar from Starship Enterprise - The Next Century , appears in the second part of the double episode . She plays Dr. Jenna Yar, the grandmother of Tasha Yar.

Enemy: Starfleet!

Episode 6
About 8 years ago, before the start of the five-year mission, the USS Eagle was lost. She is now commanded by Alersa, a member of the Meskans. Through this, and through her ability to impose her will on others and influence their perception, she gained an advantage in the war against the Peshans. The only way the Enterprise can end the war is to destabilize subspace to make faster than light speed impossible.

This episode shows a new Enterprise. BarBara Luna (“Marlena Moreau” from the episode “Mirror, Mirror”) was won for the female lead . The full episode was originally scheduled to appear in late November 2010, but it wasn't released until April 17, 2011.

The Child

Episode 7
A telepath has a child from a light being visiting the Enterprise. The course of action is essentially similar to the corresponding TNG episode.

The script for this episode was originally developed for Star Trek: Phase Two , later rewritten and produced for Star Trek: The Next Generation . Now it has been rewritten for New Voyages with the help of the authors .

Kitumba

Episode 8
In this episode, due to an impending war with the Klingons, the Enterprise is ordered to the territory of the Klingon Empire ruled by rival clans. There Kirk meets “Kitumba” played by Kario Pereira Bailey, the underage ruler of the Klingon Empire and descendant of the mythical Kahless. This episode, which ends with the establishment of the High Council and the curse of the Duras clan, was intended to depict the transformation of the Klingon Empire between the original series and the movies.

The first half of the episode was released on September 7, 2013, and the full episode was released on January 1, 2014. This story is also originally based on a script that was written for Star Trek: Phase Two , with the difference that Kitumba was designed as a two-parter. The author Patty Wright revised the original script by John Meredyth Lucas, and one of the spaceship models for the Klingon fleet was designed by the well-known model designer Andrew Probert, who is best known for his work in the various Star Trek series. This is also the last episode in which James Cawley plays the role of Captain Kirk.

The script, which was actually written for the original Star Trek Phase Two , was shot in June 2009 in historic Fort Ticonderoga, USA . Ben Alpi took over the direction. The teleplay for the two-part came from John Meredyth Lucas , who also wrote Stencils of Violence . " Series consultant" for the episode was Daren Docherman, who "did the special effects for Star Trek: The Movie and Star Trek: Voyager Spaceship, among other things ." The character of Arex (known from Star Trek: The Animated Series ) should be introduced as a 3D character with the voice of Chris Doohan in this episode. The episode was published with a different cut.

The episode lasts 1 hour 5 minutes and 33 seconds.

Mind-sifter

Episode 9
The Klingons take Kirk's memory with the help of the Mind-Sifters or CNS manipulator and with the help of the guard transport him back to the year 1958. The crew has to come to terms with the loss of the captain. Will the new Captain Spock find the one believed dead there, let alone search against the orders of Starfleet?

An episode based on a short story by Shirley S. Maiewski. The story has already been published as a sci-fi novel by Terra Astra .

The Holiest Thing

Episode 10
Dr. Carol Marcus (known from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan ) is the sole survivor of a terraforming team. The station on Lappa III was destroyed by an explosion. Why was the station destroyed? Why was protomatter released? What kind of ship is that camouflaged in a cloud of dust? And what kind of new species is this, whose civilization is built on trade rather than science?

Torment of Destiny (In production)

Episode 11

This will be a sequel to the TOS episode For the World is Hollow ("The Lost Planet"). The Enterprise returns to the Fabrini asteroid Yonada, where McCoy fell in love with the high priestess and guardian of the oracle Natira. According to the trailer, the following action can be assumed: The Fabrini reach their destination, possibly the planet of the Lazulians. A usurper named Orthros usurps power over the oracle, possibly believing that there would only be room for one people on the target planet. Due to technical and legal problems, the publication is a long time coming. A release of episode 11 is announced for the end of 2017.

As episodes 12 and 13 "Bread and Savagery" and "Origins: The Protracted Man" were planned, but due to legal regulations, they will probably no longer be realized. According to the English language Wikipedia, “Bread and Savagery” should be a sequel to “Bread and Games” and “Origins: The Protracted Man” should be a review of Kirk's time at the academy.

Origins - The Protracted Man

This episode looks at Jim Kirk's early years at the academy. It should be a kind of counterpart to the then current Star Trek movie by JJ Abrams . The episode was shot in 2010 and was in post-production for a long time. The episode is now considered to have failed, it was never finished.

Bread and Savagery

This story, based on a script by Rick Chambers, was filmed in June 2012 and then went into post-production. According to the English language Wikipedia, “Bread and Savagery” should be a continuation of “Bread and Games”.

Kilkenny Cats
